UWC Documentary Sheds Light on Food Insecurity and Community Resilience in the Breede Valley

Food and food security are of pivotal importance, as many South Africans struggle to put food on the table.

DSTI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) published its first documentary, Harvesting a Valley of Resilience: Challenges and Solutions from the Western Cape.

The documentary – an important part of our ongoing work to advance inclusive and resilient food systems in South Africa and beyond – explores the paradox of food insecurity in the agriculturally rich Breede Valley Municipality.

It highlights the local innovations and community-led solutions addressing these challenges. Drawing on insights from researchers, local government, civil society, and community members, it is both a research-informed reflection and a call to collective action.

Following the local premiere in Worcester in February 2025, further screenings are being organised in Cape Town, Pretoria, and beyond. We will keep you updated on these developments.

Communications manager at the Centre, Carla Bernardo said any organisation is free to screen the documentary within their organisation or to other audiences. She extended an invitation to the public to contact the Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) for participation in the form of a speaker, panellist, or facilitation support to assist in raising awareness.
