South Africa Boosts Plastic Recycling

South Africa is increasing recycled plastic use, outperforming global averages as recycling volumes rise, circular economy practices expand, and local industry resilience drives environmental and economic value nationwide.

Plastics SA has released its latest annual plastics consumption and recycling figures, showing steady growth in recycled plastics use despite ongoing pressure within the country’s waste management system.

The report, based on verified, in-person industry interviews, highlights that recycled plastic consumption has grown significantly faster than virgin plastics over the past decade, signalling a clear shift toward circular production models.

South Africa’s mechanical plastics recycling rate reached 28.4%, placing the country above the global average and ahead of many developed economies, with total recycled volumes rising to 471 000 tonnes in 2024.

The packaging sector remains the largest plastics consumer, while recycled polymers are increasingly used across clothing, agriculture, construction, furniture and leisure products, reflecting growing market diversity.

While the recycling value chain remains highly dependent on waste pickers and small recycling businesses, the industry continues to demonstrate resilience, innovation and job creation under challenging conditions.

Plastics SA has called for urgent collaboration between government, industry and communities to strengthen waste collection systems, support recyclers and unlock further growth in South Africa’s circular plastics economy.

Anton Hanekom emphasised that recycling is a proven solution, noting that stronger systems and market demand for recyclate are key to long-term sustainability and inclusive economic growth.
