A delegation of nine young South African scientists proudly represented the nation at the 10th BRICS Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF) in Brasilia, Brazil. The team was selected by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) from a highly competitive pool of 256 applications drawn from 46 institutions across the country.
Established in 2015 at the 2nd BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Ministerial Meeting, the YSF has grown into a premier annual platform that brings together emerging scientific leaders from BRICS countries to exchange ideas, collaborate, and shape solutions to global challenges.
This year’s forum focused on three urgent thematic areas:
-
Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Contributions towards COP30 deliberations.
-
Science Diplomacy in a Changing World: Elevating BRICS and Global South perspectives on the international stage.
-
Artificial Intelligence for Societal Solutions: Exploring the role of emerging technologies in improving citizens’ lives.
Representing South Africa were:
-
Dr Beauty Shibiri (University of Limpopo)
-
Dr Babalwa Tyabashe Phume (Stellenbosch University)
-
Dr Rejoice Phetha (University of Zululand)
-
Dr Agnes Akwa Nde (Rhodes University)
-
Dr Calyton Vhumbunu (University of the Free State)
-
Dr Sean Perry (AMD Solutions)
-
Dr William Vambe (Walter Sisulu University)
-
Dr Bopaki Phogole (University of Johannesburg)
-
Dr Sinalo Mani (Agricultural Research Council)
The delegation was chaperoned by Dr Tebogo Mabotha from ASSAf.
Beyond providing a platform to present research, the forum equips young scientists with opportunities to explore education, entrepreneurship, and collaborative research across borders. It aims to nurture a generation of innovative thinkers capable of advancing science, strengthening policy, and building resilience within BRICS nations and beyond.
Key objectives of the BRICS YSF include:
-
Enhancing interaction among young researchers to tackle shared societal challenges.
-
Promoting skills and research development for emerging scientists.
-
Strengthening BRICS’s global role in science, technology, and innovation by supporting high-potential youth.
-
Encouraging the development of transnational networks and partnerships.
-
Informing and strengthening STI and youth policies while fostering entrepreneurial mindsets.
The South African delegation’s participation highlights the country’s commitment to investing in scientific excellence and ensuring its researchers play a central role in shaping the future of global innovation.
