Protec celebrates 35 years of S.T.E.M professionals.

8 August 2017

On friday the 4th of  August 2017 at the Sanlam Art Gallery in Sandton , PROTEC celebrated their 35 year milestone with a gathering of their PROTEC Alumni who have passed through the programme over the years and who are now established in their careers in the working world.

“These PROTEC Alumni are the fruits of our work and we encourage them to remain connected with PROTEC and support PROTEC as brand ambassadors to the programme and role models to our learners. We look forward to this special reunion with some of the pupils dating back to the very first branch in Soweto” says Sharon Kahn, fundraising & business development manager for PROTEC.

PROTEC’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education programme was established in 1982 in Soweto, in recognition of the need to improve the critical shortage of engineers in South Africa. The PROTEC model delivers both learner and teacher excellence programmes and teaching materials, to the most disadvantaged communities throughout the country and relies entirely on funding from corporate sponsors who share the vision to support the growth and development of technologically skilled South Africans.

PROTEC’s holistic STEM education programme, which runs in conjunction with provincial education departments, starts in senior school, continues through tertiary education and provides support in the early years of the work place.

“PROTEC consistently produces outstanding matric results year on year. The Class of 2016’s 100% pass rate from the 8 permanent PROTEC branches is even more impressive than last year’s 96,9% result” says Balan Moodley, CEO of PROTEC.

“In addition to eight permanent branches, PROTEC also runs many shorter term projects in various communities across 7 provinces of South Africa and since inception, over 30 000 learners from disadvantaged communities, have been assisted to fulfil their dreams to become engineers, scientists, doctors, educators and entrepreneurs.”
