Philipstown Turns Global Spotlight into Local Hope

Fresh from the global debut of the Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix documentary on Prime Video, a small Karoo town is harnessing its newfound fame to spark lasting social change. The story of resilience that captured the world’s imagination is now evolving into a tangible engine for community development through the newly established Philipstown WireCar Foundation.

The foundation is transforming global attention into action. Every view of the documentary, download of the new WGP Mobile Game, and purchase from the town’s e-commerce store directly supports youth empowerment initiatives.

Kay Fourie, Chairperson of the foundation and co-founder of the original WireCar race, says the project’s true power lies in its community roots. “The film was just the beginning. Now we’re channeling that attention into real opportunities. We’re inviting the world not just to watch, but to help us build a future for our children.”

At the heart of the initiative are three avenues for global participation:

  • Watch: The documentary celebrates creativity and hope born from limited resources, showcasing children who build intricate wire cars from scrap and imagination.

  • Play: The WGP Mobile Game lets users race digital versions of those cars through Philipstown’s streets, with in-app purchases funding community programmes.

  • Buy: An online store offers authentic, handcrafted wire cars and local art, providing sustainable income for artisans and preserving cultural heritage.

Vice Chair Alistair King says the wire car itself became a symbol of transformation. “A piece of discarded wire can be reshaped into something beautiful. That’s what this community is doing — turning what was once forgotten into a story of purpose.”

Funds raised will help the foundation complete a new community hub and e-learning centre offering digital skills, robotics, and driver’s licence training for local youth.

“This foundation is about dignity, creativity, and empowerment,” adds Fourie. “We’re building a future where children from Philipstown can see their potential reflected in the world.”

To join the movement, stream The Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix on Prime Video, download the WGP Mobile Game on the App Store or Google Play, or visit philipstownwirecar.com to buy authentic creations and support the town’s transformation.
