KOTRA Launches K-Food Challenge for SA Entrepreneurs

In a boost for South Africa’s food and small business sectors, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) has launched an exciting new opportunity for local entrepreneurs to tap into the booming global demand for Korean cuisine. The newly unveiled K-Food Accelerator Competition promises more than just prestige — it offers life-changing prizes, including business funding and cash prizes of up to R50,000.

The competition invites South African business owners, importers, distributors, and innovators to submit bold and creative proposals to import and promote Korean food products locally. It’s a strategic move aimed at increasing the availability and popularity of Korean food (K-Food) in South Africa while empowering local entrepreneurs to lead the way.

A Chance to Drive Innovation and Wellness

The appeal of Korean food goes beyond taste. Globally recognised for its health benefits, K-Food offers South African consumers a unique blend of tradition and nutrition — from probiotic-rich kimchi to antioxidant-packed gochujang. With the nation’s rising interest in healthier eating, this competition comes at the perfect time.

“K-Food is one of the smartest food investments in South Africa right now,” says Kyle Henry, KOTRA Trade Analyst. “This initiative isn’t just about winning money — it’s about building sustainable, future-focused businesses. We’re inviting South Africans to take part in shaping the country’s next food revolution.”

Unleashing Creativity Beyond Business

In addition to supporting importers and distributors, KOTRA is also opening the door to creative thinkers. The competition encourages participants with no import experience to submit ideas that will make K-Food popular in South Africa — from viral social media campaigns to uniquely local takes on Korean classics.

“You don’t have to be in the food industry to change the way South Africans eat,” adds Henry. “One powerful idea — whether it’s a fusion dish at a braai or a TikTok campaign — could be the spark that transforms K-Food’s future here.”
