June is Cancer Survivors Month and you can help

Every day, thousands of children across the country struggle with cancer and June is dedicated to honouring the remarkable survivors of this life-threatening illness. Championed by non-profit organization Cupcakes of Hope, all South Africans are invited to bake a difference and contribute to ensuring that young cancer patients stand the best chance possible of making a full recovery.

Cupcakes of Hope assist between 200-230 cancer patients every month by paying for their medical and other day-to-day needs. This year, more than 1 500 activity packs and gifts have already been delivered to 20 pediatric oncology wards across South Africa. Committed to assisting people where they need it most, in their own communities and homes, Cupcakes of Hope has also supplied hospitals with much need medical equipment, PPE equipment, educational toys as well as doing hospital room makeovers.

Cancer is a terrifying condition, not only for patients but also for their family members. For this reason, the Cupcakes of Hope team constantly create new ways to provide support that not only addresses medical needs, but also lifts the spirits of these children.

They recently started distributing a Comfort Buddy, which comes in the form of a soft toy named Able the Lion, filled with items that are needed in hospital. This delightful companion was actually designed in honour of a cancer survivor, Able Mdhluli who is now a second-year medical student, and provides comfort, companionship and hours of fun to cancer patients in hospital. Each Comfort Buddy costs approximately R 1 000 to produce and dispatch to a patient. Watch the video about Able the Lion here.

Helping is simple. Register to bake 24 or 48 cupcakes here. Collect donations for your cupcakes from your friends and work colleagues, (The suggested amount is R 10 – R 20 per cupcake) and donate it to this incredible organization. Regardless of how big or small your contribution is, you will be making a tremendous difference in the life of a child facing cancer, and every act of kindness counts.

The #CelebrateCancerHeroes fundraiser ends on the 30 of June 2022.
