City Backs Mitchells Plain Job Growth

Hundreds of new call centre jobs are heading to Mitchells Plain after the City of Cape Town supported a major business process outsourcing investment in Beacon Valley.

The City of Cape Town has helped facilitate a new business process outsourcing investment in Beacon Valley, bringing office space, training facilities and hundreds of employment opportunities to the Mitchells Plain area.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis visited the site alongside Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, as construction of the new contact centre takes shape.

“It was exciting to see this new investment taking shape at the Beacon Valley site, which will enable hundreds more jobs for the people of Mitchells Plain and surrounds,” said Mayor Hill-Lewis. “Growing call centre jobs have been one of our city’s proudest successes, with over 100 000 Capetonians now working in this sector.”

The Mayor noted that call centre employment in Cape Town has doubled over the past decade, particularly benefiting young people, first-time jobseekers and residents of lower-income communities.

The business process outsourcing sector contributed R23 billion to Cape Town’s economy in 2024, more than double its contribution a decade ago, reinforcing its role as a key driver of inclusive growth.

Alderman James Vos said the location of the investment reflects a deliberate strategy to bring jobs closer to where people live. “Residents from Mitchells Plain have shown a strong appetite for opportunities in the BPO sector, with the area contributing the largest share of Cape Town’s BPO workforce,” he said.

“This development is a strong example of how targeted partnerships can translate into real jobs and economic impact for local communities,” Vos added.

The investment was facilitated by CapeBPO, the City’s industry special purpose vehicle, and marks the second major contact centre to open in the greater Mitchells Plain area.

“This opportunity represents a significant milestone in the BPO journey for Cape Town and South Africa,” said CapeBPO CEO Clayton Williams. “Our vision is to locate 20 000 seats across the Cape Flats over the next 10 years, and this development is a critical catalyst toward making that vision a reality.”

The Beacon Valley project underscores how coordinated public and private sector collaboration can drive skills development, local employment and long-term economic opportunity in historically underserved communities.
