The City recognised 50 of its senior Community Residential Unit (CRU) tenants who have consistently paid their rent over the past few years – setting such a great example to the younger generations, and especially those who are not paying their way, which impacts the income required for maintenance. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Councillor Carl Pophaim, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, were in Elsies River to honour the residents who are an important part of our public housing success. Rental income is how the City can repair and maintain these units.
‘The City held a special celebration in honour of 50 outstanding senior residents who have consistently paid their rent over the past few years – they certainly are leading by example and showing how we can all do our bit to help, no matter how big or small the contribution is as long as we contribute.
‘We celebrated and recognised our loyal tenants for their commitment and contribution. Our senior residents are often the loyal tenants who consistently pay their rentals. Without that income, the City is unable to properly maintain the units. We would like to see a renewed culture of payment among our tenants, especially the younger generation. With the rental income that we do receive from tenants, we are able to repair and maintain our housing units. We have more than 39 000 tenants and their families who live in our units and we want to improve conditions. The City’s Public Housing Department is investing in maintenance and repairs of more than R1,2 billion over the next few years.
‘We always encourage our tenants to please make their rental payments. It is important that rental is paid regularly, in full and on time each month. There are a number of ways tenants can pay, and we encourage them to make use of our convenient online options. If tenants are not able to pay, we remind them that there is help available and they are encouraged to approach us. We thank our tenants for their continued support,’ said Councillor Pophaim.
