Computer equipment to ease the challenges of remote learning

Responding to a request from the Department of Education, De Aar Solar Power stepped in to fund computer equipment, for a cohort of classroom assistants who are currently studying teaching. All six beneficiaries of this equipment, form part of the solar farm’s Numeracy and Literacy Programme, which also offers bursary funding.

“We are pleased to have been able to assist and are especially grateful to the Northern Cape Department of Education’s De Aar offices, for alerting us to the challenges of the teaching coaches, who have been struggling to study remotely, due the CV-19 campus restriction,” said Anita Takor, Community Liaison Officer at De Aar Solar Power, which provided this funding as part of its Socio-Economic Development Programme.

She added, “We expect that the laptops will not only assist in their studies, but also aid the coaches to prepare for their classroom duties as numeracy and literacy coaches.”One of the recipients, Geraldo Isicks said, “The laptop is really helpful because I can do all my work from home instead of having to go to the school library and wait to access the computers there.”

De Aar Solar Power’s Literacy and Numeracy Programme comprises 15 Literacy and Numeracy Coaches across 11 schools in the communities of Hanover, Philipstown, De Aar and Britstown. It addresses key issues relating to foundation phase literacy and numeracy, which is supported by trained assistants. The beneficiary schools include: Emthanjeni Primary School, Alpha Primary School, Willie Theron Primary School, Zingisani Primary School, Kareeville Primary School, Hanover Primary School, St. Johns Primary School, Hayes Primary School, Van Rensburg Primary School and Luvuyo Primary School.
