South African app helps pupils pick out suitable careers

Upon finishing high school, many Matriculants are not sure about their future plans, some of them even write their final exams not knowing what they want to do after Matric. For this reason, some of them end up taking gap years or picking the ‘wrong’ career path.

In an effort to help matriculants choose a suitable career, Schalk Burger and Sicelo Joja established the Xhuma app.’Xhuma’ means ‘connect’ in isiZulu. The assessment app helps young people work out their aptitudes and gives them options and guidance.

“There’s a cognitive, personality and interest component that brings everything together. This helps pupils figure out what to do in taking into consideration their capabilities and interests,” said Burger. Furthermore, the app also helps those who are looking to study further are able to get bursary opportunities.
