Knight Foundation launches tech-focused artist fellowship program

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2021 Knight Arts + Tech Fellowship, a new initiative aimed at supporting artists who are employing innovative approaches to technology and new media.

Through the program, which is administered by United States Artists, unrestricted grants of $50,000 were awarded to five artists. The recipients are Black Quantum Futurism (Philadelphia), a collective that is exploring Black temporalities and community futurisms through writing, digital projects, installations, performance, music, film, visual art, printmaking, and creative research projects; Rashaad Newsome (Oakland), a visual artist who blends collage, sculpture, film, photography, music, computer programming, software engineering, community organizing, and performance to construct a new cultural framework of power; Rodolfo Peraza (Miami), a multimedia artist whose work focuses on public spaces — virtual and physical — and includes data visualizations that highlight Internet culture and the impact it is having on society; Sondra Perry (Newark, New Jersey), an interdisciplinary artist whose work in video, computer-based media, and performance explores race, identity, family history, and technology; and Stephanie Dinkins (New York City), a transdisciplinary artist and Kusama professor of art at Stony Brook University who creates platforms for dialog about AI and its intersection with race, gender, aging, and the future.

“For decades, artists have found novel ways to leverage technology in their art,” said Knight Foundation vice president for arts Victoria Rogers. “We’re thrilled to champion the work of these five gifted artists, whose practices experiment with new ways to bring to light and address today’s issues.”
