Goodbye long grant ques, hello new voucher system

The South Africa Post Office is tasked with promoting economic growth through the provision of postal, logistics and retail products and services that are competitively priced. However, ever since the issuing of the Covid-19 Special Relief of Distress grant, the long queues outside the South African Post Office ques have multiplied.

The long queues will soon be coming to an end thanks to an electronic voucher system introduced by the Postbank and Post Office. The electronic voucher system was designed in line with the Postbank core mandate of establishing a presence with unbanked and under-banked communities to advance financial inclusion.

The two companies jointly developed an electronic voucher payment system for recipients of the Sassa monthly grants and the Covid-19 Special Relief of Distress grant. The electronic voucher system will enable grant recipients to cash their vouchers at retail outlets.

Following Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams visit to a local post office in Mbizana, Eastern Cape, last week and witnessing grant recipients queuing at dawn to receive their special grant payment. Ndabeni-Abrahams emphasised the importance of expediting the digitisation of the banking service to alleviate long queues outside pay points.
