A Moray charity is looking for supporters to help undertake a ‘virtual’ 4438-mile journey around Africa’s largest lake.
For the past seven years Garmouth couple John and Christine Carney have been helping children at the Mayega Children’s Centre in Tanzania.
The aim now of their charity, Busega Scotland, is to raise £4438 for the school/orphanage which currently looks after 21 disadvantaged kids.
The children’s centre is on the banks of Lake Victoria.
That fact was the inspiration for the couple’s latest fundraising idea – a virtual journey around the entire length of its shoreline.
John says: “The weather is getting better and exercise helps us feel better, so what could be more rewarding than helping some incredibly special children and young people?
“You can include any form of exercise or combine walking, running, jogging, cycling, swimming, golfing, exercise bike or treadmill and why not include pushing the pram, walking the kids to school, and taking the dog out.
“Do what you want for as long as you want – the miles will all add up in our ultra-inclusive event.
“And you can be sure that all the sponsorship cash you raise will reach the children at Mayega.
“Busega Scotland will cover the cost of the Western Union transfer fee and we have a long-established system in Tanzania to ensure the money is safe.”
One of the charity’s supporters who’s taking part already is Judy Campbell, a nurse from Lossiemouth.
In 2017/2018 Judy spent six months in Tanzania working with Busega Scotland.
Currently, she’s walking 1083 miles, which is the equivalent of trekking all the way from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
Busega Scotland will continue its fundraiser until the end of October.
John adds: “It may take a while but – pamoja pamoja, as they say in Tanzania – we can do it.”
The charity has prepared a travel pack for participants, which includes a mileage sheet to keep a track of their distances.
