Football giants to engage fans on finances and the future of football

Football is set to return in South Africa. On Saturday, 25 July 2020, some of Mzansi’s most influential footballing personalities, including Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Simba Marumo, will give fans insight into the future of football and the much-anticipated final stages of the Nedbank Cup. They will join other football industry experts as a part of Nedbank’s Football and Finance Summit, which will be broadcast on SABC 1 at 14:00.

Panellists will discuss their experience during the national lockdown and share knowledge with footballers and fans on how they can navigate the financial challenges posed by the current global climate. They will also share their insights on how the sporting side of football has been affected and offer solutions.

Started in 2019, the Nedbank Football and Finance Summit was launched as a thought-leadership and knowledge-sharing platform to discuss various topics on football and finance, together with the Nedbank Cup, South Africa’s premier club football knockout tournament.

‘With football set to return, we want to have meaningful discussions about the future of the sport and the effect on finances,’ says Khensani Nobanda, Group Executive at Nedbank Group Marketing. ‘In the context of the era we’re currently in, we are compelled more than ever to engage our communities and the football-loving public on practical solutions to these challenges.

‘Our aim with this refreshed version of our Football and Finance Summit is to inspire both the public and the football fraternity, through their passion for the game, to change their views on how they manage their money, while exploring the effect of the pandemic on the game we love and how it can continue to thrive going forward. Through our #PlayYourPart campaign we also want to bring a message of hope and to encourage South Africans to once again unite through the power of sports by watching football responsibly at home,’ says Nobanda.

‘I’m excited to be a part of this initiative and thank Nedbank for the opportunity. It is an unfortunate fact that in South Africa football players lack sound financial advice. As a result, they often experience financial difficulties during and after their playing days. Now, more than ever, players and fans need guidance, and I look forward to being able to use my experiences to offer them that, says Letsholonyane.

In addition to Marumo and Letsholonyane, fans can look forward to insights from Premier Soccer League Senior Manager, Lux September.
