Zeerust communities united through sports

The Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality Mayoral Cup Youth Tournament, which took place mid-June, brought together soccer and netball teams within the communities in the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipal area. For the first time, the tournament encompassed a female soccer team, which further stimulates the development of women’s soccer in these communities.

Recognising the importance of sports in unifying communities and encouraging the youth to become active, Zeerust Solar provided support to four male and four female soccer teams, as well as four netball teams participating in this tournament. The support included soccer and netball kits and balls, as well as air pumps.

“Many young people in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality are involved in sport and are passionate about it, however, there are few sports facilities and lack of professional development. This has led to some of them giving up in pursuing their dreams of being professional players. It is for this reason that we sponsored the teams taking part in this event,” said Tshepo Kgoloane, Community Operations Manager for Zeerust Solar.

This support forms part of Zeerust Solar’s youth development strategy, which aims to support young people in the development of skills to deal with the pressures of adolescence and to secure job opportunities.

“We feel that it’s our social responsibility to support youth events in the municipalities in which we operate. During our discussions with the municipality, we learned that this is one of the platforms that the municipality uses to motivate the youth and to keep them away from substance abuse,” concluded Kgoloane.
