SAFTAs Spotlight South Africa’s Storytelling Power

The South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) return to SABC2, celebrating the creators whose work continues to shape the country’s cultural narrative, creative economy and shared identity.

Launched in 2006 by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), the SAFTAs were created to recognise excellence, build industry standards and strengthen South Africa’s screen sector by honouring both established and emerging talent. Over nearly two decades, the awards have evolved into a national platform that recognises storytelling across genres, languages and formats while promoting local content on a global stage.

Hosted by Anele Mgudlwa and Sipho “Alphi” Mkhwanazi, the ceremony will spotlight productions and practitioners whose work reflects lived realities, challenges perceptions and contributes to social dialogue. Katleho Kat Sinivasan and Pamela Mtanga will lead Gold Carpet coverage, offering behind-the-scenes insight into the people and ideas driving the industry forward.

Beyond entertainment, the SAFTAs recognise the broader social impact of local storytelling — from stories that preserve culture and language to productions that highlight pressing societal issues and create opportunities across the value chain.

The Craft Awards, hosted by Moshe Ndiki and Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, further acknowledge the technical and creative professionals whose work strengthens the industry’s competitiveness and long-term sustainability.

As the awards approach their 20-year milestone, organisers say the SAFTAs remain a vital platform for celebrating South African storytelling, innovation and industry growth while amplifying voices that reflect the country’s evolving story.
