South African Maskandi music has received international recognition after multi-award-winning artist Khuzani Mpungose was honoured for advancing indigenous music, isiZulu storytelling and cultural heritage.
Khuzani received the Cultural Icon in Maskandi Music Award at the Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards & Diplomatic Summit in Oxford, United Kingdom.
The award was presented by the Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Chewe Munkonge, in the presence of leaders, diplomats and guests attending the international gathering.
The recognition places the spotlight not only on Khuzani’s career but on Maskandi as an important expression of South African cultural identity reaching audiences beyond the country’s borders.
Professionally known as Khuzani and popularly known as Indlamlenze, the singer, songwriter and performer has built his career around preserving the foundations of Maskandi while introducing its distinctive music and isiZulu storytelling to new generations.
His international recognition follows a series of major achievements in South Africa.
In 2024, Khuzani won Best Maskandi Album at the South African Music Awards for Angidlali Nezingane.
In April 2026, he also won the newly introduced Best Maskandi category at the METRO FM Music Awards for Umanikinikana, reflecting the genre’s growing prominence on mainstream national music platforms.
Khuzani credited his supporters with helping Maskandi continue to grow and reach new audiences.
“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has continuously supported my music and my journey,” he said.
“Every person who buys my music, streams it, shares it, attends my performances and continues to believe in Maskandi has contributed to this achievement.”
Beyond his own recordings and performances, Khuzani has expanded his contribution to the music industry through Indlamlenze Group & Production, established in 2011.
The company works across music production, physical and digital distribution, events and the development and professional management of emerging artists.
Khuzani’s career has also earned him a DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Award for Favourite Music Artist or Group and Ukhozi FM’s Song of the Year, alongside his SAMA and METRO FM honours.
The Oxford award now extends that recognition internationally, celebrating an artist using music to preserve language, storytelling and cultural identity while creating greater visibility for one of South Africa’s distinctive indigenous music traditions.
