Celebrating MOSAIC’s Legacy: A Call to Action for Greater Support in the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

In the NGO space, the message is always clear: support for these organizations means support for the communities they tirelessly work to reach. It’s a reality that no matter how well-funded an organization might appear, there’s never enough to go around. Funders are far fewer than we might think.

On the eve of Women’s Day, I had the privilege of attending the MOSAIC Training, Service, and Healing Centre’s 30th anniversary “Pieces 2 Peace” gala dinner—a celebration of an incredible foundation that has, for decades, been a lifeline to countless women. Founded by Rolene Miller in 1993, MOSAIC has assisted over two million women in transforming their lives from the devastation of gender-based violence to peace. The gala was also a fundraiser, highlighting a stark truth: even with such a remarkable legacy, MOSAIC still struggles to meet its financial needs.

This anniversary should have stood alone as a celebration of the NGO’s achievements. However, like many in the social development sector, MOSAIC faces an ongoing challenge—choosing whom they can afford to help, leaving others in desperate need. This is not a reflection of their commitment but rather the harsh reality of limited resources. In a country scarred by abuse, the work of organizations like MOSAIC is vital, yet it’s often overshadowed by the constant need for more funding.

Rachel Kolisi, co-founder of the Kolisi Foundation and keynote speaker at the gala, resonated deeply with the audience as she shared her journey of using her platform to fight against gender-based violence. Her honesty about her struggles with imposter syndrome and her message to “tap into your gut feeling” were a poignant reminder that making a difference doesn’t require perfection—just the courage to act.

MOSAIC’s Chairperson, Maxine Case, shared an emotional account of her mother’s horrific stabbing in 2018. She spoke of how MOSAIC’s support was crucial during the 18 court appearances that followed, underscoring the organization’s critical role in helping survivors navigate the long and often painful journey to justice and healing.

MEC of Social Development in the Western Cape, Jaco Londt, also highlighted the financial struggles NGOs face. Despite R35 billion being spent on corporate social investment annually, the impact on the ground is often minimal, with little to no metrics in place to measure real change. “Where is the CSI money going?” Londt rightly pointed out that for NGOs to truly thrive, rather than merely survive, there needs to be a shift in how these funds are allocated and utilized.

This gala was more than just a celebration—it was a call to action. The theme of collaboration and partnership emerged as a vital takeaway. MOSAIC’s story is proof that meaningful partnerships can make a lasting impact, and the survivors who shared their stories are living testaments to the power of this work. However, MOSAIC, like many other organizations, needs our support to continue their mission.

To truly make a difference, we need to step up and support organizations like MOSAIC. Every donation, no matter how small, can contribute to saving lives and creating a safer, more just society. It’s not just about charity; it’s about investing in the future of our country. By supporting these causes, we’re not only helping individuals—women who have been broken down by violence—but we’re also contributing to a ripple effect that can lead to widespread change. Imagine a South Africa where every woman and child can live free from fear and violence. That’s the future we can help build, one contribution at a time.

So, how can you help? You can start by donating directly to Mosaic or similar NGOs. Volunteer your time if you can, or even just spread the word about the incredible work being done by these organizations. By supporting these causes, you’re not just giving money—you’re giving hope, strength, and a chance at a better life for someone who desperately needs it.
