The City’s community development worker programme (CDW), in partnership with the Western Cape Government is teaching business skills to youth in Macassar and Khayelitsha.
Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, yesterday visited a Youth Entrepreneurship Training project which is assisting potential young business owners and leaders of non-profit organisations in Macassar and Khayelitsha.
The aim of the initiative is to link young entrepreneurs with skills and knowledge, and advice around values that will enable long term growth and sustainability. Some 20 youth from each area will participate.
The training was facilitated by a representative of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA). On graduation day all the participants will be required to pitch their business ideas and will then be issued with a certificate confirming they have completed the course. Some R19 650 has been budgeted per area.
‘The City of Cape Town has an important role to play enabling economic growth in previously-marginalised communities. As the City, our main contribution to economic growth is providing reliable and high quality basic services such as waste removal, to create an environment where business can flourish, however smaller initiatives like this can also make a big difference. I hope that those who participated are successful in their endeavours and become leaders in their community, so they can pass on the lessons learnt to the next generation,’ said Alderman Twigg.
