Customers who wish to support the Table Mountain fire relief efforts can do so by donating to the Act For Change Fund at the till point in any Shoprite, Checkers or Usave supermarket nationally.
The Act For Change Fund was established specifically to support disaster relief efforts. Customers can contribute to this till-point donation facility by asking the cashiers to add as little as R5 to their grocery purchase.
The Shoprite Group manages the Fund on behalf of its customers and all donations will be paid over to beneficiary organisations supporting Table Mountain fire relief efforts. There are no administrative costs.
Collection trolleys for non-perishable food items have also been made available at the following Checkers and Checkers Hyper supermarkets in the Western Cape: Rondebosch, Kenilworth, Plumstead, Meadowridge, Tokai, Canal Walk and Brackenfell.
“We want to thank our Shoprite & Checkers customers for their unbelievable generosity following this devastating fire,” commented Lunga Schoeman, CSI Manager for the Shoprite Group. “It is Ubuntu in action and we applaud them for their support.”
The Group today donated coffee, tea, milk, cereals, bread and eggs to the 28 hotels providing temporary accommodation for approximately 3 100 UCT students, to prepare breakfast tomorrow morning.
The Shoprite Mobile Kitchen has also been serving warm meals throughout the day at various locations in Cape Town, while Checkers continues to support the firefighters battling the blaze with essentials including water, energy drinks and fruit.
“We remain in close contact with the Volunteer Wildfire Services and Gift of the Givers regarding the fire relief efforts, and will do so for as long as necessary,” confirmed Schoeman.
