President Ramaphosa has called on all South Africans to demonstrate their remembrance, through five days of mourning and KFC Africa will be heeding that call.
As a brand that has operated in South Africa for close to 50 years and after a year that has caused unprecedented loss, it is critical to reflect, grieve and remember as a South African community. Further to this, we recognise the demise of many businesses, the sacrifices made and the impact on families and children.
The most vulnerable in communities across South Africa, have been the children. By missing out on access to education, healthcare, food, due to the Covid pandemic, and the risks they are exposed to due to GBV- we must do everything we can to protect our children. Almost two thirds of households (62%) have found it difficult to provide their families with varied, nutritious food during the pandemic with over half (52%) of reporting food being too expensive.
To this end, we are mobilising our employees to commemorate the week of mourning and asking every KFC team member within every restaurant in South Africa to wear a black mask on Friday 27th to show our solidarity as a nation. A moment of silence will also be observed at the start of every shift during the 5 days of mourning in each of our 950 restaurants across the country.
In addition to this, we will be amplifying our KFC Add Hope efforts where we will be providing an additional 1.6 million meals in December 2020 towards childhood feeding schemes across South Africa – a R5 million investment from both KFC and customer donations combined.
Together we stand in solidarity.
