Engen fuel support helps local NPO with flood relief efforts

Engen has stepped up with fuel support to assist local humanitarian organisation, Ashraful Aid with its relief work in KwaZulu-Natal.Engen’s R10 000 fuel donation will be used to power Ashraful Aid’s delivery vehicles, which have been called into heavy service following the recent flooding in the province.

Founded 25 years ago, Ashraful Aid helps the needy and vulnerable in over 15 countries.

Since the initial flooding in large parts of KwaZulu-Natal in late April, Ashraful Aid’s teams have been providing affected communities with assistance with water, food, blankets, mattresses and hygiene packs.

“We are extremely grateful to Engen for their support which will go a long way in helping us reach those most in need,” comments Chief Operations Officer at Ashraful Aid, Yusuf Nabee.“This sponsorship will primarily be used to support our ongoing relief efforts in KZN as well as daily food relief projects in Johannesburg,” adds Nabee.

Sykry Hassim, General Manager of Engen’s Durban-based refinery, extended thoughts and prayers to those impacted by the floods and commended Ashraful Aid for their work.“We admire the humanitarian contribution of Ashraful Aid and hope that our support helps bring some relief to vulnerable households as many families begin the long process of rebuilding their lives,” says Hassim.

Over the past year, Ashraful Aid has distributed well over R20 million worth of humanitarian aid, including over R4m following the KZN and Gauteng social unrest in June 2021, and a further R4m relief, which is currently being provided following the floods.

As a long-standing caring member of the Durban community and with deep roots in KwaZulu-Natal, Engen is a significant contributor to social causes in the province.

Along with four Engen Maths and Science Schools in KZN, and the Engen Computer School in South Durban, Engen also supports numerous upliftment initiatives and emergency aid interventions through its fuel donations to Gift of the Givers and FoodForward SA.
