Back to school smiles for learners within Blackburn Village

Over 8000 people live in an informal settlement in the Blackburn Village, a huge number of them living below the poverty line.

The children from this community have been placed at various schools through the intervention by Community Participation of the eThekwini Municipality.

It is clear that affordability to gain access to basic needs for school is very limited, thus Vivian Reddy, Chairman of Sibaya Community Trust reached out to this community and donated school bags, which included stationery kits, lunch boxes and juice bottles.

Reddy said it is most fulfilling to see the happiness and smiles on the faces of these children, it makes one realise that in serving others the most amount of joy can be derived.

Sibaya Community Trust also built a skills centre at Blackburn Village to assist upskill people living in the community. A kitchen had also been built by the Trust from where daily meals are served to the poorest of the poor within the village.

To date R250-million has been spent on various philanthropic responsibilities by the Sibaya Community Trust making us one of the largest investors in social upliftment programmes in KZN, added Reddy.

Whilst we may have funded a massive number of social projects, I pay tribute to those NPOs and entities who work hard on the ground to take care of our vulnerable citizens, said Reddy. We also appreciate the support provided by the leaders within the Blackburn community and the eThekwini Municipality who are spearheading various additional upliftment projects.

Sibaya Community Trust continues to impact positively on the lives of masses of vulnerable people – from healthcare to education to social upliftment in various other forms.
