242 Grade 7 learners at Olifantsfontein Primary School in Midrand have successfully completed an innovative MoneyTime financial literacy programme, which will equip them with knowledge on critical personal finance tools, equipping them with essential financial knowledge and tools that will set them on a path to financial success.
Through its Consumer Education Fund, The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) supported the 15 week-long programme covering 30 modules on financial topics such as budgeting, saving, banking, career exploration, and investing. The programme was received positively by the school management, teachers and above expected participation by the pupils, culminating in a graduation ceremony where they were awarded medals and certificates to honour their achievement as official MoneyTime Champions.
MoneyTime, a product of the MyLife® Wealth Creator platform, teaches students foundational financial concepts through engaging lessons and a money management game. The programme’s interactive structure, combining self-paced learning with a practical money management game, made it both enjoyable and accessible. This approach allowed pupils to apply their newfound knowledge, giving them the confidence and tools needed for making smart financial decisions in the future.
Marcia Motsepa, a Grade 7 graduate from Olifantsfontein Primary School, said: “MoneyTime has taught us valuable lessons that we’ll carry with us throughout our lives. It’s more than just learning about money- it’s about learning how to make smart choices, plan for our future, and understand the true power of saving and investing. I now see money not just as something to spend, but as a tool to create opportunities and security for myself and my family. This programme has made me feel more confident and empowered to take control of my financial future,”
The programme’s success was reflected in its impressive results. All 242 learners participated in a blend of scheduled computer lab sessions and voluntary lunch sessions. Every student completed the first 11 modules, with 135 students going on to finish all 30. The programme resulted in a remarkable 31% improvement in financial literacy, with an average class score of 67%. At the graduation ceremony, each student received a certificate and a medal to celebrate their commitment and growth.
Johan Olivier, MD of MyLife, said: “These young learners have embraced financial education with curiosity and enthusiasm and we are pleased with their performance. This programme not only provides foundational financial knowledge but inspires students to make smart financial choices. Together with SAIA, we’re excited to bring MoneyTime to more schools and communities.”
Zanele Gigaba, SAIA Transformation Manager, said: “Our partnership with MyLife® fills a critical gap by offering young people tools they need to navigate financial challenges. MoneyTime aligns with SAIA’s goals in terms of the Financial Sector Charter (FSC) and provides an engaging, effective platform for young learners.”
Themba Palagangwe, SAIA Governance and Transformation General Manager, said: “The MoneyTime programme is an incredible opportunity for our youth to build the foundational financial knowledge that will benefit them throughout their lives. By teaching skills such as saving, budgeting, and responsible spending, we are not just helping students manage money; we are empowering them to make informed decisions and access opportunities that will shape their futures. SAIA is honoured to support such a programme, and I am inspired by the dedication of these learners and the enthusiasm they have shown. Financial literacy is a life skill, and I encourage each student to continue applying these lessons every day.”
With strong support from the pupils, educators and parents, SAIA, MyLife®, and the Olifantsfontein Primary School community are committed to expanding this programme, ensuring more students have the opportunity to build essential financial skills.
