Parkview Potjiekos Day Sets Impact Record

The fires roared and pots bubbled as George Hay Park in Parkview came alive for the biggest and most successful Nicarela Potjiekos Competition to date. With more than 40 potjies simmering, thousands gathered to share in food, fun, and fundraising — all in support of the Nicarela Charity.

From early setup to the final servings, the event drew an extraordinary public response. “We are overwhelmed by the turnout, generosity and community spirit,” said Daneel Jordaan, chairperson of Nicarela. “Every plate sold helps us make a tangible difference to those who need it most – and this year, the support truly blew us away.”

Parkview’s signature fundraiser saw:

  • Over 2,300 potjie meals sold – up more than 50% from 2023

  • Beverage sales up nearly 60%

  • Nicarela food stands doubled their revenue

  • Independent vendors saw excellent trade all day

While final figures are still being tallied, early estimates point to a new fundraising record, with all proceeds set to support long-term impact through education, resources, and skills development for communities in need.

Adding flavour to the day was a panel of judges including 5FM’s Nick Hamman, Marina Appelbaum, Warren Murley, Nick Panayiotou, Nobuhle Mthethwa, and Ebie du Toit from The Pot Luck Club. Their energy and passion made the judging experience memorable for participants and guests alike.

The day’s success was thanks to:

  • Creative and generous competitors

  • Sponsors who ensured a festive, free-flowing event

  • Volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes

  • Thousands of community members who showed up in support

From kids enjoying jumping castles to grown-ups raising a glass in the beer tent, the event captured the true essence of community connection.

“The Parkview Potjiekos Competition is more than just a fundraiser – it’s a celebration of community,” said Jordaan. “Our heartfelt thanks go to every person who helped stir the pot.”
