Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus virus in many parts of the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that people should wash their hands repeatedly and use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when away from basins.
The first case of Coronavirus in South Africa was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize on the 5th of March, following the announcement, citizens purchased sanitizers in large amounts which left leading retailers out of stock of preventive products.
“We are aware of the stock shortages on certain hand sanitizers in our stores. This is due to global demand in sales after the recent announcement made regarding the coronavirus in South Africa. Our team is working on urgent stock replenishment,” said Dischem.
To help fight the spread of the coronavirus in the country and address the high demand of sanitizers, the SA Liquor Brandowners Association (SALBA), the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) and Vinpro have collectively committed to donating 40,000 litres of pure alcohol for the production of sanitisers,
The organizations said in a joint statement “We are gravely worried about the impact that this outbreak has already had on the personal health and wellbeing of the people of our country and the world. The outbreak of Covid-19 brings with it a significant negative economic impact on what was already a very constrained economic climate in South Africa. We would like to play our role in minimizing the impact on the people of SA and help to drive economic recovery into the future,”.
They pledged to stand with the Government and people of South Africa in a national response to the outbreak of Covid-19.
