A number of vulnerable Zimbabweans living in South Africa have managed to register for food assistance at the Zimbabwe Embassy in South Africa.
As the pandemic spreads, many foreigners have been left lying idle in countries like South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. In South Africa, Zimbabweans have also been victimised by the pandemic. With this, Zimbabwe has called for its citizens to register for food aid at their Embassy.
Expecting mothers, unemployed youth and female headed households will be prioritised as they happen to be the most vulnerable. Citizens must have applied at the embassy for help in order to receive the food parcels.
Zimbabwean Consul General in Johannesburg Melody Chaurura has confirmed that 3300 Zimbabweans successfully registered for food assistance. However, some Zimbabweans unfortunately did not manage to register for the food parcels on time.
Chaurura has said there won’t be any extension of the deadline for people to apply because they were already processing the requests they received before the deadline passed.
“There is no room for extension at this point because submitted details are already being processed,” said Chaurura.
Zimbabwe is getting assistance from the International Organisation for Migration, which had previously asked the embassy to submit a list of Zimbabweans to be included in the roll out.
