Protea locals come together to think clean

Fifty Protea Glen Phase 6 locals, residing in extensions 7, 8, 9 and 10, including Protea Glen’s Ward 13 councillor Bawinile Pamela Magwaza, gathered on the 4th of February with one mission: think clean, leading to the successful launch of the Protea Glen Cleaning Campaign.

The campaign,  a collaboration between South Africa’s largest fibre to the home supplier, Vuma, and the City of Johannesburg’s Pikitup, deployed 15 team members, as well as resources such as funding towards refreshments and a garbage tractor. Protea Glen Pick ‘n Pay and Dr Mkhawane donated refreshments to the volunteers.

“This initiative was one we were especially enthusiastic to ‘get our hands dirty’ on, because this is our home and the state of our streets and community is of concern to us,” says Sylvester Lingwati, one of the Protea Glen Cleaning Campaign organisers. “Partnering with Pikitup and Vuma was a natural partnership that we were proud to have secured, as their donations were significant to the success of the campaign. ”

“We strive to empower others who address the great need for such social initiatives that not only benefit them but the greater community, hopefully this is a trend that spreads across Soweto,” Lingwati concludes.
