In Matabeleland North, the police have expressed concern over a rise in cases of drowning in the province.
The provincial police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda recently told the media that police were conducting public awareness campaigns to enlighten communities about risks associated with getting closer to huge water bodies such as rivers.
Banda continued to say the police had established a satellite sub-aqua unit in Binga, which would focus on rescue operations.
In his words, Banda said: “We established a Binga satellite sub-aqua unit in partnership with a non-governmental organisation, Action Aid Zimbabwe which will focus on parks and sub-aqua issues with the aim of stopping human-to-wildlife conflicts.”
After several cases of drowning involving fishermen who use canoes had been reported, the sub-aqua unit would be strategically located so that it could cater for the Zambezi water catchment area.
With everything happening, the police said they would also engage in rescue operations for marooned people and assist farmers by providing technical services. The police would work with the Zimbabwe National Water Authority.
