New WhatsApp line launched to help address spike in gender-based violence

Within the first week of lockdown, the SAPS received 2320 complaints (which are only the reported cases), with only 148 related charges laid. The statistics represent a 37% increase in the weekly average of South African Gender-Based Violence(GBV) cases reported last year. Separate to the SAPS figures, the National Gender-Based Violence Command Centre has received triple the amount of calls during the lockdown.

In response to the reported cases of GBV, local celebrities have launched the Carling Black Label #NoExcuse‘The Bravest Thing’ campaign which offers a WhatsApp line for victims of abuse to receive “silent” counselling. It’s supported by TV presenter, Dr Musa Mthombeni; Sports Presenters, Thomas Mlambo and Andile Ncube; Radio DJ, Moeti “Mo Flava” Tseki and former football player, Phumudzo Manenzhe to mention a few.

The campaign has a holistic approach to ending GBV through various programs aimed at men who are seeking mentorship and assistance in becoming better men and to provide the victims of abuse with help. The Helpline is for both men and women. Victims of abuse can send the word BRAVE to 0800150150 and get in touch with the right organization to get the help they need. It

“Given the various circumstances people find themselves in during the lockdown, it is difficult for victims of abuse to call for help and also stops men who are ashamed of showing weakness from reaching out. So, the text-based service will enable them to silently send a text for help, without being detected,” said Arné Rust Label Brand Director at Carling Black.
