Meals on Wheels to host one of their biggest Cook-a-thons for World Food Day

This World Food Day NGO  Meals on Wheels , has pledged to feed 10 000 underprivileged people, this is essentially one of their biggest Cook-a-thons and the biggest group they’ve fed in a day (in one region) in their years of operation. This Cook-a-thon will take place at Nasrec Expo Center and the food will be donated to Social Development Beneficiaries working with SASSA and Meals on Wheels daily Beneficiaries just to name a few.

Yanela Takawira, Meals on Wheels’ Training and Development Manager, says that this initiative is rooted in the company’s purpose, which is to eliminate dependency syndrome, through skills development and farming and food gardens at schools and communities.

“We’re bringing our purpose to life by showcasing our values and what the company stands for. We are a fully-fledged and recognised non-profit organization that believes that hunger is the extreme materialization of poverty and human deprivation, therefore, mitigate this by feeding the poorest of the poor. We hope that our contribution will inspire the people of South Africa to continue to find new ways of growing their community and living healthier lives.”

Yanela adds that Meals on Wheels’ work is not just about gardening or growing food. It is also about growing people and empowering them with the skills and resourcefulness to help themselves on many fronts, from earning their own money, to support their families.

The Training Department is the newest baby of the company, as part of their 5-year strategy is to empower the underprivileged communities by going “beyond the plate of food” and creating more sustainable projects and doing away with the “dependency syndrome” which comes with just giving a plate of food.

Meals on Wheels has also partnered with c OS Holding and Dotty Moments who believe in the initiative and have donated to make the event possible. The handover event will be on Wednesday, 16 October, at Nasrec Expo Center.
