Kellanova expands its impact to alleviate hunger in Schools and Communities

Kellanova, a leading global food company that is committed to advancing sustainable and equitable access to food, is proud to announce the expansion of its Better Days Promise impact to communities with the launch of the Kellanova Better Days Promise Gardens in Kwa-Thema, Springs.

The company works with Reel Life, its implementation partner, to fulfil its promise to fight school hunger and promote long-term food security in communities by providing resources to set up gardens in school and educating school children and communities on how gardens can reduce hunger.

This initiative will benefit three schools with about 2610 children – Umsobomvu, Ntokozweni, and Job Maseko Primary Schools and 300 households of children attending these schools.

The schools and communities will receive 211,000 servings of vegetables from these vegetable gardens. For the duration of the project, Kellanova has hired four community members who are taking care of the school gardens and educating the community on gardening to ensure success.

Kellanova supports a climate-positive future; these Better Days Promise Gardens use only 2 litres of water daily for watering, helping the schools and communities conserve 2.2 million litres of water compared with traditional garden watering methods.

“We initiated these Better Days Promise Gardens based on the knowledge that a gardening skill will enable the schools and communities to be self-reliant and that fosters sustainable and long-term food security solutions,” says Zandile Mposelwa, Kellanova Corporate Affairs Director.

“Food insecurity is a severe issue in South Africa, where 21% of the people experience food insecurity. Reel Life cares deeply about teaching communities to grow their food and empowering themselves to make a systemic and long-term change to become food secure, says Dineo Mahasha, the Reel Life Managing Director.”

Kellanova is committed to alleviating school hunger. Since 2014, the company has donated over 58 million meals to alleviate school hunger through its school feeding programme.
