Hamba Bamba Funda (HBF) in Celebrating Nelson Mandela Day: Nutrition Nurtures – Empowering Moms & Babies

After last year’s incredible success in celebrating Nelson Mandela Day with a remarkable event, we are thrilled to announce that HBF are continuing the tradition this year with a new theme centred around “Nutrition Nurtures.” We are excited to extend an invitation to you to join us in making a meaningful impact on this special day (18 July).

This year, we are partnering with esteemed organizations including the City of Johannesburg, FERL (Food Evolution and Research Laboratory), School of Tourism and Hospitality, Sappi (South African pulp and paper industries LTD) , and the Flower Foundation to host a memorable event at the Meadowlands Welfare Centre in Zone 9, Soweto. Our goal is to support 67 mothers and 67 babies in need for 67 minutes.

This year, we plan to empower mothers by sharing knowledge about the importance of good and healthy nutrition for them and their babies. Join us in making a difference in their lives.

Here’s a glimpse of what we have planned:

Educational Sessions: Local guest speakers, including representatives from Hamba Bamba Funda (HBF), will address mothers about the crucial role of good nutrition in the early stages of their babies’ development.

Clothing Parcels: We will be distributing clothing parcels for both mothers and babies to provide them with essential items they may need.

Jars of Hope: Our “Jars of Hope” initiative aims to provide families with nutritious meals. Each jar, when filled with water and cooked, can feed a family of four.

Vegetable Parcels: We intend to provide fresh vegetables from a local market to mothers and their babies in need. The quantities required are as follows:

1 Cabbage

6 Onions

1 Bunch of Carrots

6 Potatoes

2 Butternuts

1 Bunch of Spinach

4 Oranges

4 Apples

How You Can Get Involved:

In order to make this event a success, we are seeking assistance from compassionate individuals and organizations like yours. Here’s how you can help:

Clothing Drive: Contribute to packaging to parcel the clothes for mothers and babies.

Jars of Hope: Contribute ingredients or empty glass jars for our initiative.

Vegetable Parcels: Make a contribution towards purchasing fresh vegetables for the parcels or contribute to packaging to parcel the veggies.

Volunteer: Sign up to be a volunteer on the day and actively participate in spreading joy and support.

Additional Support Needed:

Water Sponsorship: We aim to provide each participant and guest with a bottle of water. A sponsor for at least 150 bottles would be immensely helpful.

Ground Cover / Astroturf: We need a ground cover or Astroturf measuring 15×20 meters to cover the tiled floor, ensuring that mothers don’t have to sit on the cold floor with their babies during practical sessions.

Your contribution, whether big or small, will make a significant difference in the lives of these families. We are committed to recognizing all our generous donors and sponsors by adding their logos to our sponsor flyer and providing an official invite to our event on July 18th.
