Doctors work together to donate to Gweru taskforce.

Doctors in Zimbabwe have joined hands to help in the fight against Covid -19 by donating personal protective equipment worth $7 100 to the Gweru district.

According to the secretary of the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) Norman Matara, the doctors managed to sponsor these equipment’s with the help of a charity organisation, American Friends Service Community.

The main intension was to help Gweru healthcare workers when attending to patients infected with the dreaded coronavirus. The consignment include masks, gloves, sanitizers, gowns and shoe covers.

Matara mentioned that they were confident that healthcare workers would feel excited and motivated about working in Covid-19 risk areas if they were well protected and their safety was guaranteed.

“If they don’t have protective clothing, health workers are afraid to attend to COVID-19 patients or work in places where there is a risk of contracting the virus, so we felt we need to help with the PPEs,” said Matara.

As doctors, Matara said they understood exactly what the frontline workers were going through hence they needed support. He further called other organisations to help capacitate these workers with similar support.

“We are doing this with a view to complement the government and local authorities’ efforts in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

The donations were received by Shakespeare Mureyani, the Gweru district Covid-19 taskforce leader who said the donations would go a long way in boosting confidence among the frontline workers.

“We are grateful of the good gesture shown to our team. With the equipment that guarantees safety of health workers, I am sure their work rate will be doubled,” he said.
