Doctors warn pregnant women against COVID-19

In recent a discovery, doctors have stated that pregnant women are likely to experience the
coronavirus much more severely than women of the same age who are not pregnant.

The World Health Organisation and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention is appealing to all pregnant women to take extra precautionary measures against the virus as they are in greater danger than most people.

Researchers from Sweden published an article by Lancet Global Health that showed that pregnant women with Covid-19 were five-times more likely to be admitted in intensive care unit and four-times more likely to receive mechanical ventilation than those who are not pregnant. Between 1 March and 22 August last year, approximately one in four women aged 15 to 49 years hospitalised with Covid-19 were pregnant.

With the given results from the researches, South African doctors are warning pregnant women and those with new born babies to be careful and to stay vigilant so they do not contract the virus. Due to the changes in their bodies and immune systems, pregnant women can be fatally affected by respiratory complications.
