Cabinet to stop violence against children

Following the numerous reports of child abuse cases, the Cabinet has approved a recommendation that will see the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare look into the indicators of violence against children in different sectors.

Minister of information and communication technology, Peya Mushelenga announced the news in a statement recently. However, the decision came as a result of many issues addressed at the sixth decision-making meeting by the Cabinet.

Over the past months child violence has risen in Namibia. As a result, the decision was based on a survey regarding violence against children and young people in Namibia, which the Cabinet took note of.

Namibia recently approved the recommendation to support the development and implementation of a national plan of action to end violence against children.

The focus shifted to enhancing the capacity of key stakeholders on the Childcare Protection Act. The stakeholders include magistrates, courts, and social workers among others. The gender ministry is to implement all of these recommendations together with the National Statistics Agency.

When Mushelenga spoke he said: “The Cabinet also directed the gender ministry as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security to enhance the relationship between the two ministries by developing strategies to address the plight of women that are incarcerated with their minor children, including juvenile offenders and street children.”
