Westfalia Fruit, a global leader in avocados and plant-based products, is addressing the critical skills shortage in South Africa’s agricultural sector having hosted a career guidance event for Grade 11 students from eight schools. On August 6th and 7th, 2024, students visited Westfalia’s Tzaneen farm, at Faerie Glen to gain insights into various professional opportunities within the agricultural industry, a vital component of the South African economy.
The career guidance event aimed to attract more young people to the sector and provide insights into the vast array of careers available in agriculture, with emphasis on avocado production and value addition. The agricultural sector remains a cornerstone of the South African economy but faces a significant skills shortage, with the average age of farmers currently at 62 years.
Many young South Africans perceive agriculture as an outdated and unappealing career choice due to stereotypes of the sector being labour-intensive and low paying. This perception, coupled with barriers such as limited access to land, financial resources, and training, contributes to the sector’s difficulty in attracting younger talent.
The career day showcased the diverse and innovative career paths within agriculture. Through hands-on learning experiences and interactive panel discussions, the event highlighted the modern and dynamic nature of careers in agriculture, including roles in agribusiness, agricultural technology, and sustainable practices.
Educational programmes are crucial in reshaping young people’s views on agriculture, these programmes enhance students’ understanding of the sector and its various career opportunities. Initiatives like this career event help shift perceptions from viewing agriculture as outdated to recognising it as a vibrant and evolving field.
The event offered students a chance to explore specialised fields such as plant pathology, plant breeding, plant genetics, and agricultural engineering, among others. Attendess engaged directly with professionals, gaining knowledge about different roles and the skills required to succeed.
