Wednesday, March 18, is celebrated the world over as World Recycling Day, On the day, it is important that we all reflect on the role we play every day in making a difference, when it comes to looking after our environment. The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) looks at why Global Recycling Day is so important.
“Recycling and in particular, glass recycling is an easy way for you to make a positive impact on the environment and appreciate Global Recycling Day. Glass can be recycled endlessly without a decrease in the quality of the product. We should all be celebrating individuals, communities and organisations which are leading the way in sustainable practices including the recycling of waste,” explains CEO of The Glass Recycling Company, Shabeer Jhetam.
We can all make a difference to the environment and you can start small to make a significant difference. TGRC has created a list of a few helpful tips to assist you in changing your habits this Global Recycling Day:
- Familiarise yourself with your nearest glass bank
Make sure you know where to take all your glass bottles and jars in order to recycle them. TGRC places glass banks at convenient locations to allow members of the public to drop off glass for recycling. Schools, shopping centers and service stations offer ideal sites for glass banks. - Recycle and buy recycled products
Imagine all of the complex processes needed to create new items from scratch: After mining the raw materials, these then need to be transported, cleaned from impurities, processed and treated until they can finally be transformed into the desired end-products. While reducing the processes in sourcing raw materials by recycling, you’ll also be reducing the demand for energy and cutting down on CO2 emissions.
- Separate at source
Keep it simple. If you want your family and especially your children to start recycling, you’ll have more success if you make it an easy and fun activity for them. Place your family’s recycling bins in a high-traffic area, preferably near the rubbish bin. Make sure each bin is clearly marked to help your kids separate waste.
- Social Media Participation
Be sure to use your social media platforms on the day to initiate conversations about Global Recycling Day, and encourage followers and friends to recycle while emphasising the role this plays in protecting the environment.
