Greenpop uses art to raise awareness for the environment

Not-for-profit organization,Greenpop was founded with the goal of planting more trees in South Africa. Over the years, the organisation has grown from strength to strength. It has planted over 130,000 trees around South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

Aside from their tree planting initiatives, they also use art to create awareness and create beautiful dialogues within the Garden Route communities of the Western Cape. The organisation’s annual Eden Festival of Action, which sees thousands of trees planted each year, will also be hosting an Art for Awareness event.

The Art for Awareness event will see two stunning murals painted with the collaboration of the public. This year the Eden Festival of Action will include tree planting, workshops about plant-based food, eco-building, and so much more.

In partnership with the British Council, Cooperative Innovations and BazArt, participants of the Eden Festival of Action 2021 will be creating two mural artworks in the Garden Route as part of a bigger campaign in the Western Cape. These murals, with the addition of Virtual Reality technologies, will be digitised and exhibited globally with the vision of taking the important messages (like the effect of plastic pollution in our oceans) to COP26 in Glasgow.

Greenpop aims to create collaborative public art which educates communities about local and global environmental issues, empowering people to take positive action. Since 2018, they have worked with three professional artists to paint six murals at various public spaces on the Garden Route.
