A number of residents in the Nyanza and South Rift counties have been chosen as beneficiaries of the water project currently underway in Kenya.
The African Bank has allocated Sh2.4 billion to fund the water project through the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWWDA).
200, 000 people are to be provided with water through the water project. Another 51 000 people will be provided with proper sanitation services as said by George Odede the Agency Chief executive.
The on-going project will supply water to several towns and Kisumu west as it involves the expansion of water supply and the construction of a waste treatment plant in Kisumu.
Places targeted by the water scheme include Homa Bay, Kisumu, Migori, Nyamira, Siaya, Nandi and Bomet counties. Studies carried by the project will take two or three months to be complete. Residents of these areas have been suffering from perennial water shortage that has caused death of animals during dry seasons.
Amid the pandemic, the LVSWWDA intends to supply water to learning institutions in preparation for the official re-opening of schools after COVID-19. 87 rural and urban schools have been targeted by this project.
Commenting on the issue, LVSWWDA chairman Erick Okeyo said “It is a timely programme, considering that Covid-19 is spreading. The schools will have water by August. The target amount will help us acquire equipment for sinking boreholes.”
The chairman also called for donors stating that the agency set aside Sh80 million and is still seeking Sh50 million more for the plan.
