As part of its ongoing infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has made significant progress in replacing water and sewer pipes across the city, with a notable increase in activity during November and December 2024. Read more below:
Since the start of the financial year in July 2024, the City has replaced 29 463m of water pipes and 57 867m of sewer pipes, investing R323 million to upgrade ageing infrastructure and improve service delivery.
November and December progress:
In November and December 2024 alone, the following replacements were completed:
· 11 016m of water pipes replaced across Sea Point, Oakglen, Somerset West, Hout Bay, Claremont, Bellville, Bloubergstrand, Wellway Park East, Gordons Bay, Eerste River, Strand, Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Macassar, Retreat, Bergvliet, Kommetjie and Glencairn.
· 16 836m of sewer pipes were replaced in Montague Gardens, Bellville South, Bellville, Plumstead, Constantia, Happy Valley, Blackheath and Athlone.
‘We have successfully achieved 58,9% of our 50 000-metre water pipe replacement target and 57,8% of our 100 000-metre sewer pipe target for the 2024/2025 financial year. We appreciate the patience of our residents during these essential upgrades, which ensure the sustainability of our water and sanitation services,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
The City remains committed to proactively replacing ageing infrastructure to minimise leaks, reduce water wastage, and provide a reliable water supply to all residents.
