SABC1 is introducing a new docu-reality series, Bare: As I Am, designed to spotlight deeply personal stories and social challenges affecting South Africans while offering a platform for healing, reflection and support.
Hosted by Pebetsi Nolo Matlaila, the series will air weekly and focuses on individuals whose voices and experiences are often overlooked. Through raw storytelling and guided conversations, the programme explores issues such as trauma, family conflict, abuse, poverty and resilience.
The series follows real-life participants as they confront painful histories and seek understanding, accountability and solutions. By sharing their journeys publicly, the show aims to open dialogue around difficult social realities while encouraging viewers to reflect on their own circumstances.
“Bare: As I Am is a life-changing and impactful show that deals with challenges that people do not commonly bring to the forefront,” said Matlaila. “The series shines light on problems, searches for solutions and offers hope while empowering individuals to take control of their lives.”
Across thirteen episodes, the show will unpack a wide range of emotional and social experiences. Early episodes include the story of Winnie Siburi, who survived a devastating shack fire caused by a jealous former partner and now lives with severe burn scars after a long recovery.
Other episodes explore the emotional impact of family secrets, generational trauma, sexual violence, poverty and the challenges faced by parents raising children with disabilities.
Through each story, the programme aims to move beyond awareness by encouraging dialogue, accountability and support systems that can help participants rebuild their lives.
Bare: As I Am will broadcast weekly on SABC1 and will also be available on SABC Plus.
