Social TV hosts 2nd Storytelling Workshop and unpacks the power of visuals

Last year,  Fybotech and Social-Tv.co.za had the impact investment industry talking about the importance of storytelling at Social TV’s first Media and Storytelling Workshop in Johannesburg. This year’s workshop was split into two parts, with part one focusing on theoretical aspects of visualization and part two focusing on the practical.

Candice du Preez, Chief Marketing Officer of FYBOTECH kick-started the workshop with an exercise which focused on technology and how it can improve storytelling. The workshop was facilitated by Media Training Specialist & Director of Social -TV  Samm Marshall. She was followed by Shannon Rosenburg, Director of @Eighty6Mark who unpacked how one can use data analytics to further improve the storytelling process. His presentation focused on what social media tells us about images and videos.

“Impact news is all about reaching the right people. Today we can tell the exact data which is attached to a story” said Rosenburg.

Visualization through visual imagery has been an effective way to convey messages, Isabella Rorke from Animation SA , highlighted the role of animation when telling a story. Animation is capable of communicating sensitive information, said Rorke. Her presentation focused on different perceptions of animation and the challenges of the industry. PR Specialist, Diane Naidoo spoke about being authentic when developing a visual press release. She shared past practical examples of press releases which were conceptualized in the form of visuals. “Once you know your target audience, it becomes easier to communicate your message” explained Naidoo.

According to Kimberly Stark, Actress, Producer, Director of Stark Raving “You need”. She discussed how visuals can be used as an effective tool to tell stories and suggested that one should find the right balance between words and images. Film Maker and Brand Manager, Tswanelo Tsoi briefly explained the purpose of branding and how developing a visual storyboard could enhance your brand. Complimentary of Tsoi’s presentation Noxolo Ngobese, CEO of Colour Grass with Toes unpacked the 5 steps of production.

One of the main aims of this workshop was to help impact development participants discover the power of visuals in storytelling and provide a platform where attendees can network, engage and be informed. Marshall wrapped up the workshop by taking us back to the impact that came first images every taken and he shared interesting facts about the power images and visuals for communicating  CSI/CSR and Shared value initiatives.
