Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) celebrates 25 years of protecting the right to freedom of the press

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA)  will be celebrating  25 years in its role as a media watch dog, presenting a week of events that open discussion and debate on the key issues facing the media today. Media Freedom Week will take place from the 22nd of October to the 25th of October

MMA invite all those looking to protect the truth to ponder, probe and interrogate the current state of the media in a thought-provoking series of discussions and events The following events will be taking place from Monday 22 October to Thursday 25 October 2018 and all interested parties are invited to attend. 

MONDAY 22 October 2018

Journalism is in crisis. Can children save the day?

Venue: JoziHub, 44 Stanley Ave, Milpark, Johannesburg

Time: 18:00pm for 18:30pm

With the media in turmoil, how is public trust restored? If you are worried about the state of journalism and want to see a future for the media and your children come and be inspired!

The winners of the MMA Isu elihle awards will also be announced at the event. These Awards honour journalists across Africa who come up with the most innovative and creative story ideas about children.

TUESDAY 23 OCTOBER 2018

Are we “post truth” or “post journalism” and does it really matter?

Venue: Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre,1 Duncombe Rd, Forest Town, Johannesburg

Time: 18:00pm for 18:30pm

We live in a world where all the information you want is at your fingertips, and with “fake news” on the tip of everyone’s tongue, how do we know who to trust? What is the difference between propaganda and proper journalism and does it matter? Join the MMA for an early evening panel discussion where some solutions into the complex world of misinformation are shared.

The SABC: On its way up or on its way out?

Venue: The Jesuit Institute South Africa, 15 Molesey Avenue, Auckland Park, Johannesburg

Time: 18:00pm- 18:30pm

The SABC has rocked from disaster to calamity over the last decade, but now there is an independent board, a new head of news and two independent inquiries taking place. Do these changes signal a new era for South Africa’s public broadcaster or are we set for more of the same?  MMA will unpack this issue with experts from both inside and outside the SABC.

THURSDAY 25 OCTOBER 2018

Elections2019: The bots are ready… Are you?

Venue: Google South Africa, Golden Oak House, Bally Oaks Office Park, 35 Ballyclare Dr, Bryanston, Johannesburg

Time: 18:00pm- 18:30pm

 Around the world elections and public narratives are being swayed, manipulated and distorted by a range of online forces. With next year’s elections posed to be the most contested South African elections since 1994, we know that some will seek to deliberately undermine our democracy. Hear from experts what to expect next year and how to respond to these threats.
