International Drone Day: Exceptional Young Drone Pilots Pushing Boundaries

Before Khanyisile Zondi joined the YES drone programme in 2020 at the age of 23, life was filled with many challenges. She was unemployed and a college dropout, and she faced the daunting prospect of securing employment without prior work experience. Her future seemed uncertain, with many barriers to opportunity.

However, Khanyisile’s journey took a transformative turn when she embraced the Youth Employment Service (YES) Programme, embarking on a path that would redefine her future. Enrolling in the YES drone academy in Saldanha Bay, she immersed herself in comprehensive training, emerging as a competent commercial drone pilot. Practical experience equipped her with a diverse skill set, including data collection, surveying, mapping, blasting, security, and inspection.

The qualifications she attained through the programme proved to be catalysts for change, propelling Khanyisile into limitless possibilities. Today, at 26 years old she works as the Head of Youth Development Programmes at RPAS Training Academy, she stands at the forefront of innovation in the drone industry.

Khanyisile’s drone license and training played a pivotal role in securing her current employment. Her expertise and proficiency in the field positioned her as an invaluable asset, enabling her to assume leadership roles and spearhead youth development initiatives within her organisation.

Reflecting on her journey, Khanyisile recounts notable experiences and achievements since completing the drone programme. As a qualified programme facilitator, she has successfully guided numerous youth through training programmes, empowering them to excel in the drone industry. With over two years of experience as an instructor and more than 200 hours of instructional expertise, Khanyisile’s impact is tangible and far-reaching.

Looking ahead, Khanyisile sees boundless opportunities for growth and advancement in her career. Armed with qualifications and experience, she anticipates a future filled with excitement and promise, eager to continue adding value to herself and her field.
