Empowering youth in Witzenberg

A highly successful Youth Day Summit focused on empowering young people and highlighting the positive impact they can have within their respective communities, was held on 28 June 2023. Led by the Witzenberg Local Municipality in collaboration with Perdekraal East Wind Farm, the event addressed the challenges faced by youth and explored potential solutions.

“This collaborative effort exemplifies our commitment to empowering the youth and enabling them to create a better future for themselves and their communities. By addressing critical issues and fostering dialogue, the Youth Day Summit has set in motion a positive trajectory for the young generation of Witzenberg,” stated Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm, which co-funded this event.

The Youth Day Summit brought together young individuals from various areas in Witzenberg, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. Participants actively engaged in thought-provoking discussions and group workshops facilitated by Open Up SA. Topics such as HIV, mental health, domestic violence and unemployment were explored, enabling the participants to voice their challenges, needs, and frustrations while providing valuable insights into finding viable solutions.

The programme enjoyed a large turnout with around 60 participants in attendance. One of the participants, Ntando Mavumengwana, expressed his gratitude for the invaluable information and opportunities provided at the Youth Day Summit.

“The Youth Day Summit was an incredible experience and it provided us with a platform where we can generate ideas that can truly uplift us. The information shared during the summit was very useful, as it has the potential to create future job opportunities that will benefit the entire Witzenberg community. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Perdekraal East Wind Farm for making this possible,”  he said.
