ZTE, a global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, is sponsoring five female black students at Wits University with their Information Technology (IT) Tertiary Level 3-4 year degrees.
The sponsorship includes tuition, prescribed books, all stationary, residence accommodation, all meals and a new laptop. The financial support of ZTE, will enable these five students to focus solely on their studies.
With an unacceptably high unemployment rate in South Africa, ZTE invests in the youth through their Socio-Economic Development (SED) contributions. ZTE thus helps to build a competent and well-trained workforce that increases technology skills capacity locally and globally.

The importance of females in the telecom industry
Nikky Dong Cheng, ZTE operations director, emphasised the importance of the role of young females in this traditionally male-dominated telecommunications industry. Not only does this sponsorship assist the students to acquire critical new skills, but their lives will change and as they participate in the country’s economy, they are also contributing to the success of South Africa, she said.
Cheng expressed her enthusiasm about the impact of the sponsorship. “We believe that transformation gives people hope and it enables ZTE to make a meaningful difference in the telecommunications and technology industry, communities in South Africa.”
