Waves for Change was founded by Tim Conibear. The organisation focuses primarily on teaching children from underprivileged backgrounds on how to swim and surf, as well as to conquer their psychological challenges.
Collaborating with mental health professionals, Conibear along with volunteers Apish Tshetsha and Bongani Ndlovu, managed to implement a widely successful and award-winning Surf Therapy programme.
Waves for Change operates in several dangerous and vulnerable communities within South Africa and its surrounding areas to improve the confidence, trust, and sense of belonging that many of the members lacked.
Conibear said, “Surfing to these young people is everything. It is an escape, a challenge and a chance for young people to learn and achieve something”.
The initiative has had more than one thousand children and their life skills and surfing programme thorough a safe and fun environment.
