Binga district has launched a short story competition targeted at reaching chitonga young writers in Matabeleland North Province secondary schools.
This comes after noticing that the are talented but often cant tell their stories in the English hence the competition will help many boost their confidence in story writing. This competition will be carried through every term.
The maiden theme for the competition is centred around COVID-19. A number of sixty four pupils are taking part in the competition from Binga. According to Chitonga Writer, Onesmas Mudenda who is an Isitonga and linguistics student at University of Zimbabwe, the competition is set to be a breakthrough for the ChiTonga writers.
While commenting, Mudenda said: “Our vision is to groom young writers of ChiTonga with the competition set to run every term. Deserving Secondary School pupils within the district will be awarded.”
“The competition is set to bridge the gap between young writers and established ones hence creating an environment for them to be monitored accordingly,” continued Mudenda.
At the end of the year, participants will attend a writers workshop which will see the budding writers interacting, networking and sharing notes with established authors of the language and cultural practitioners within the district.
For long, Binga has been under explored when it comes to its linguistic and cultural riches. However, the competition is designed to put together a team of passionate minds and see them share a story about the district, the language and its cultural riches.
